Getting Settled - Part 2

So, I spent almost the entire day yesterday catching up on ironing.  Half of our clothing + a dozen space bags + being in a crate for 3 months = equals a ton of laundry and ironing. Yuck, yuck, yuck!

So, one of the boxes that I was most looking forward to getting into was my box full of American toiletries and medicines.  I know... I know, that you can get all of this stuff in Australia; but it is loads more expensive here and I want a bit more time with all of my favourite brands before I start my foray into finding replacements here.  There is just something about Bath and Body Works Kitchen Lemon hand soap that makes me think of summer days in my kitchen in Kentucky.  It's nice to have a link back there sometimes.

Plus, I already had most of this stuff stocked in our house and it would have been a huge waste of money to just get rid of it (see how well my justification is working).  I also brought my handy-dandy Ikea organizers with me that I had been using to keep all of this stuff sorted.  I swear, Ikea does organization better than anywhere else I have found - and to me, being organized is just about the greatest thing in my life!  So you see, there are separate compartments that are a variety of sizes so that I can put all of the stomach remedies together, all of the dental stuff together, all of the Bath and Body Work stuff together and so on....

I tried putting the organizers into the hall closet side by side like this (as they were back in our old house) but the closet was just a bit too shallow.  I was really disappointed; because I was trying to conserve as much space as possible.  I ended up having to put them in sideways; but I used the odd spaces left over for storage of my dryer sheets and Yankee Candles.  Plus, I had to have a whole shelf alone for my fluffy white towels!  I am happy to have them; but I am dreading the first time I need to wash and dry them.

I think I can only fit 2 of the towels at a time in the washer and I think they will take a couple hours in the dryer to reach their desired fluffiness.  Yikes! ( I am trying not to think of our energy bill for this quarter)  Really, by the time I was through stocking everything in my little closet, it ended up looking like my little American convenience store.  Perhaps I could put an ad out in the Mosman Daily and let the other ex-pats shop in the closet?  I could probably make a fair profit on all this treasure.  Just kidding... this stuff is all mine!!

I had a moment of questioning my own sanity while I was unpacking my kitchen stuff...  I kept coming across packet after packet of kitchen utensils and I started wondering why on earth I thought I needed all of this!  Really, it wasn't all that bad once I got it sorted into categories and separate drawers; but still, after having used 3 utensils for the last three months, I am starting to see that maybe I have too much in my life.  Having very little changes your mindset on how much you really actually need in your life.  I did buy a bunch of measuring cups at Ikea before we left that I didn't exactly need; but I really only bought them because they listed both the metric and the empirical measurements on them.  I figured that was something that would come in handy once I start settling into my kitchen a bit more.

We are almost done setting up the second bedroom/my office.  I have a mattress and bedding ready and waiting for the bed frame to get put together.  It's sort-of complicated and Joe was the one who took it apart and labeled everything so I don't actually trust myself to put it together without him.  I know I would end up with a leftover (very crucial) piece and then our first house guests would end up on the floor the first time they tried to crawl into bed.  We weren't able to set up my black desk as the hardware was somehow lost during unpacking; but Joe took one of the desk legs to the hardware store on Friday, pulled another Rock Star McGuyver and had it set up within 15 minutes of getting home from work....  what a nice man I married!

It's very exciting to have a desk on which to put my laptop and really type.  I think it makes me want to post longer blog entries (if these last two are any indication) when I sitting comfortably to write instead of sitting on the bed with the laptop balanced precariously on my knees.  Plus, I got to stack up all of my books in piles around me - I am trying to decide which of them I am going to read or re-read and in which order.
I have two travel books that I am deep into right now - one is about a couple from Britain that moved to Verona, Italy (I love reading about the Italians) and one is about a mother and her children who moved from Sydney to the south of France to run several small inns.  The second one isn't all that well written to be honest; but it is still very interesting to read for all of the Sydney references.  She lived on the North Shore like we do and she references streets/landmarks etc. that are now in my neighborhood.  Reading the book has been bringing me another layer of realism to the fact that I really actually live here now.

The wardrobe in our bedroom is quite small so I have been using the wardrobe in the second bedroom to store my clothes until we can get a large freestanding one from Ikea to put in the master and share.  I unpacked all my jewelry after my desk was set-up and I ran into such a dilemma - what to do with all my dangly earrings?  Necessity is so the mother of invention/innovation...  I used an old necklace of mine that I really didn't care about any more and I created my own little earring holder.  Ha ha!!  Victory again!  I must say, as much as I miss my giant fabric-backed, picture frame earring holder thingy that I made back in the States -I think this turned out much nicer and is much more tidy and neat.

OK, I'm off to get more done; but I leave you with one last photo...

My first truly yummy, homemade with my own espresso machine, flat white...

Getting Settled

Well, I am finally settling down for a much needed break from laundry and trying to catch up on my online life.  Ever since our stuff showed up on Wednesday, I have been going with all cylinders.  Most nights I have been rolling into bed past midnight - trying to fit the last bit of organizing/cleaning/moving in before our poor neighbors complain.  If I were smart, I would probably try to go a bit slower and prolong this Christmas feeling; but my need for order is winning.

The stuff showed up Wednesday morning - after everything was carried up, the guys started stripping all the wrappings off the furniture and pictures - it was like mayhem for about 15 minutes and somewhere in these piles of packing material was the hardware for our black desk.  I didn't realize that till later, of course....

After they left, I basically skipped around the apartment for a half hour taking pictures of boxes (yea, I ended up deleting them - they were very boring) and looking at our unwrapped photos.

I decided to formulate a plan...  There were several things I wanted to accomplish before Joe got home from work - I wanted to put together his desk and set up his computers for him and I also wanted to have a place where we could sit down and have dinner together.  So, I began; but at first it just looked like I was making the mess much much worse!  It was difficult unpacking the monitors and hard drives.  They were all really heavy, double boxed and wrapped in three layers of packing material; but I persisted and got the whole thing set-up.  Of course, I didn't actually run any of the wires or plug anything in as I had no idea what type of cables or anything to use.
It would have been a disaster, and besides, Joe thinks stuff like that is fun so I left the wiring for him.  The desk turned out rather nicely though - The office definitely has room for a couple book shelves as well so that should help with giving us some storage options later on down the road.

So, before we left the states, we decided to invest in a patio set from Ikea - it was flat packed so it wouldn't take up much room in the crate and it was really cheap.
So, the set consists of two chairs, a two seater bench and a table... after we got our apartment (with no balcony and no outdoor space) we decided that we would just sell it once we got it.  However, considering we don't have a dining room table or couch, we opted in favour of setting all of it up and using it as temporary furniture.  I put the patio set together and then started unpacking my kitchen stuff.  It was absolutely incredible to open each little carefully wrapped bundle.  It was the longest Christmas that I have ever had - a Christmas that lasted for days!

It went this way:

Me: (unwrap, unwrap, unwrap) Oh look - it's a mug!
Me: (unwrap, unwrap, unwrap) Oh look - it's a pan lid!
Me: (unwrap, unwrap, unwrap) Oh look - it's a wine glass!

You get the idea...  There was only one casualty and I am not letting myself get upset about it for two reasons - firstly, there could have been multiple broken items and secondly, it could have been something truly meaningful and sentimental.

That's about all I got done on Wednesday... it was enough though - I was so sore and tired by bed time!  It didn't help that I was sick already so my resident Rock Star gave me a back rub and a foot rub for all of my hard work...

Thursday was the perfect day for staying in and getting some serious work done... It was crummy and rainy outside - not super cold, just dreary and drizzly.  I got a bit artsy-fartsy with my camera and took these two pictures out our big picture window.  I focused on the skyline for the first one and on the window for the second - just some cool perspectives.
I haven't really been using my camera as much here since I have to cart it around in my purse/backpack - it's much easier to use my phone; but my phone can't do cool things like this!

Anyway - Thursday, I decided to concentrate on getting the kitchen set up completely.  I had already decided weeks ago where I wanted all of my stuff to go once it got here (yes, I spent A LOT of time fantasizing about having more than two mugs and two glasses) so it was just a matter of getting it set up in a pretty way.

Well, I guess it doesn't really matter how things look inside the cupboards; but there is a set of open shelves in the corner of our kitchen that I had earmarked as a great place to put glasses and mugs.  Since it is so highly visible I wanted to make sure that I really set it up right - plus, I can't reach the top shelf without a step-stool so I wanted to make sure that all the the types of glasses were accessible.  I think it ended up looking rather "cafe-like".  Once that was done the rest of the kitchen seemed to fall into place pretty easily.  Jen and Theresa - your pieces of art got pride of place as they rightfully deserved!
I got all of the rest of the kitchen done - including setting up a step-down converter on top of the microwave to plug the espresso maker into.  What that also means is that whenever I want to use my crock-pot, mixer or food processor from the States; I can just set them up on that counter, plug them into the converter and then go to town!  It was quite exciting that night to make dinner (Lamb Tikka Masala) in my beautiful kitchen with all of my things around me.  Using a pan larger than a cereal bowl was also a great experience!

Well, I'll post a bit more tomorrow and include some more pictures - I am afraid if I don't stop now then I never will...  Besides, the laundry calls...

Before I Fall Asleep On My Feet

So, I was trying to write this post last night in bed on my Telstra T-Hub (BTW, I highly recommend clicking on this link and watching the intro just for the sake of hearing someone say "Great Steaming Haggis" - just trust me)  when it turned off because the battery was dead.  That was my fault as I had used it earlier to order Thai food and I didn't put it back on it's cradle.  Anyway, I was too tired to get back up, get the laptop and start over.  I have good reason for being tired; but it's sort of a long story... Oh, and it requires me being a bit personal -hope you don't mind...

So, I realized on Monday night that I was getting a UTI...  Ugh - enough said...  Luckily I had asked my Dr. to write me a prescription for an antibiotic to bring to Australia with me in case one of us got sick before we got settled and found Drs here.  So, Tuesday morning I started on some Amoxicillin and started feeling better.  I woke up Wednesday morning (yesterday) to feed the cats (see previous post for that explanation) and realized that my body was screaming out for more sleep.  So, after Joe left for work, I crawled back into bed and set my alarm for ten when I had a Skype date with my bestest Meaghan.

Antibiotics always give me very vivid crazy dreams - so, there I was... dreaming about being on a ferry that was doing donuts under the Sydney Harbour Bridge while wearing false teeth that I had gotten from Christina Aguilara (yeah, I know....) when the buzzer started ringing.  I jumped out of bed - completely discombobulated, and ran to answer it.  The poor guy had to explain him self to me a couple times; but I suddenly understood - he was from the moving company and they had our stuff downstairs!  Ha ha!!  Victory!

So, these two very nice men carried all of our stuff  in while I stood at the door with our packing list and checked all of the boxes off as they came in. The only boxes that had the "Passed Quarantine" tape on them were the two boxes of our shoes.  So, much joy ensued....  I set up Joe's office and computer stuff first because I love him and he is wonderful to me - it was my way of returning the favour.

Let me just say, getting our stuff has been one of the happiest moments thus far on our journey here...  There were things that I had forgotten about, things that made me cry a little when I saw them and things that made me want to jump up and down with joy!

Well, this was supposed to be a short little update post so I am going to stop writing so I can keep unpacking.  I have a ton of photos still of the zoo and of the unpacking process so I will be posting all of that stuff shortly.  I hope you'll forgive me though, I have a box of dryer sheets and American deodorant that is calling my name!

The Weekend Cometh...And Our Stuff Does Not

Well, I am sitting at home this morning waiting for the electricians to show up.  Several of the older power points (outlets) have been sparking and popping so we figured it would be a good idea to have someone check it out.

Also the window repair guy came at "half seven" (love it!) this morning.  He took some pictures of the broken latch on the window and left.  He said that they would get the parts today and repair the window Monday or Tuesday.  So, yea... we have had a semi-open broken window for a week now.  It's getting hard to keep my feet warm.

It's a beautiful Friday and we have plans to go on a pub crawl tonight with the people from Joe's work.  That's always a good time so I am looking forward to it immensely. Tomorrow we have a bunch of errands to run and Sunday we are going sailing with some of Joe's coworkers.  Needless to say, one of the errands tomorrow will be for motion sickness pills for me (just in case).  I'm usually fine in Joe's Mom and Dad's fishing boat in Florida - I seem to only be bothered on cruise ships/large slightly moving wharfs etc.... but it never hurts to be prepared.

Our crate still has not arrived and the shipping company has stopped returning my emails.  At least I know it is in port so I don't have to lay in bed at night envisioning our wedding photos and my parent's things sitting at the bottom of the ocean.  Now I just imagine customs going through every box, touching all my things and then wanting to charge me a thousand dollars in small petty fees.

(OK, decided to take a break here and call them while I was thinking about it)

So, according to Loretta, quarantine still has to go through our crate.  Customs has already looked at the paperwork but they haven't heard back from them yet.  Quarantine can't look at the shipment until customs approves the paperwork.  So, what that basically means is that....  Our shipment has been at their warehouse for 15 days and the only thing that has happened it that the paperwork was given to customs. (yes, this is the same company that told us that the processing time was 10-15 days - apparently processing time means "when we decide to look at it for the first time").

I think I'll count us lucky if our things arrive before summer.....

So Much To Say

Well, the move was long and tiresome; but it went as smoothly as something like that can.  I had yet to see the apartment except for a video and photos so I was nervous (and Joe was even more nervous) that I wouldn't like it.

I love it!  Love it! Love love love it!

Joe loves it too as you can see!

The views are incredible from every room but the second bedroom.  I am sitting up in bed typing this right now and if I glance to my right out the window I can see the Harbour Bridge.  I'm sorry; but I need to repeat that.  I can see the Sydney Harbour Bridge from my bed!

We got our new mattress set delivered that afternoon and after it was set up; but before I put sheets on it, we were treated to a friendly visit by the neighborhood Rainbow Lorikeets.  One of them (see picture) actually tried to come into the bedroom!  I shooed him away; but he just flew over to the bathroom window and hung out there for a while.

I certainly didn't mind - they are beautiful and their birdsong is so very pretty.  He let me get really really close to him to take pictures so I am assuming that the previous tenants were on friendly terms with them.  I also heard a Kookaburra for the first time very early this morning...  I was lying in bed awake around 5:30 in the morning and it was so loud and obnoxious it actually made me jump a little!

We got the rest of the appliances over the next day or so - I scoured Gumtree (like Craigslist but better) and found a fridge, washer and dryer that I really liked for a good price.  The fridge is 520 Litres which means that it is "American Size"!  I'm very very happy with it and I can't wait to cover it with (recent) photos of my nieces and nephews (hint hint!!)

The washer and dryer are also great in that they are a little bigger than the ones in our serviced unit in the CBD.  I did my first load of laundry tonight and it was a success!

I am getting coffee tomorrow morning with someone that I met on Yanks Down Under which is a website for Americans living in Australia.  I am a little nervous about making a good impression; but I think it will be just fine.  I am going to multitask by dropping off the dry cleaning on the way and then dropping off some papers at the real estate agents after.

I am doing a big grocery haul tonight and having it delivered tomorrow afternoon; but I think I will also pop into the grocery tomorrow morning and pick out my own produce!

Busy and Happy

I’ve always been able to handle a large volume of work. Something that I’ve always really prided myself on was my ability to finish work on a deadline - to work at an absolutely insane pace and still get things done… Well, there is always a point when a line gets crossed and you are so busy that you can’t decide what to get done and in what order. In those cases, I would end up getting nothing done because I was so overwhelmed!

So, that’s how I feel tonight as far as my brain and my writing capabilities. I have so much that I want to write about that I can’t actually concentrate on one specific thing long and completely enough to get it done. Besides, it’s late… I’ve had a long day, a couple glasses of wine and hot bath. That means that I am no longer good for much…

Hopefully, I’ll be able to sort out my thoughts and my photos over the next couple of days and then bang out some really great entries.

Suffice it to say though, we are checking out the Hillsong City Campus in the morning and I am happy happy happy and even more happy in this apartment!

How Little Do You Need To Live?

I've been so excited that we are moving to our new place on Friday that I have been in a bit of denial....

We will most likely not get our crate from the States until the end of August.  That means that we will be in an apartment for an entire month with only the contents of our suitcases.  Wow.

We bought a mattress set last weekend and it is being delivered the day we move in... I immediately began the hunt for appliances (we need to provide our own washer, dryer and fridge) and found the washer and dryer second hand. I am working on getting a fridge this week.

What I didn't realize was how much you need for just the basics of everyday living.  I keep thinking of all the things in our crate that I am dying to get.

So, with all of these things in mind, we took a trip out to Ikea yesterday armed with a small list and the knowledge that everything that we bought would need to be carried home in bags.  Eek....  I am proud to say that we only spent a very little bit and we now have just enough to get us through the month:

2 plates, 2 bowls, 2 glasses, 4 sets of silverware, a set of steak knives, 2 mixing bowls, a frying pan, a sauce pan, 1 cutting board, a trash can, 2 towels, 2 washcloths, a fitted sheet, 2 pillows, and 1 blanket.

It is going to be a very very long month!

I still need to go to Target or Meyer and pick up an electric kettle, ironing board, iron, and microwave.  I'll figure that out this week.

I am spending all my extra time dreaming about the 2 sheet sets in the crate, and the dishes in the crate, and the furniture in the crate, and the books in the crate, and the chairs in the crate, and so on....  It's going to be like Christmas morning up in here when we get our stuff!

Ohhh!!.. and, in much more fun and exciting news, I got a "Little Whipper" which is a little handheld milk frother and I am now making some fabulously delicious flat whites in my very own kitchenette.  Yea, it's pretty awesome!

The Mentality of Moving

It's one in the morning here in Kentucky so technically I am writing this on Tuesday.  That means that we leave for Australia tomorrow.

It's hard to describe how I feel about this whole thing.  "Unreal" might be a good word?  There is a numbness that is protecting me from the intense emotions that a move this big must have attached to it.  It probably helps that we have been so incredibly busy getting ready for the move.  We start early and roll into bed late, exhausted.  The reality of this move is all around me - we are staying at my in laws, I give the keys to the our renters today, there are 5 very large suitcases by the front door, we have an actual address in Sydney, we have 2 actual phone numbers in Sydney and we leave tomorrow.

It feels a little like going on a very long vacation and I don't know how long it is going to take once we are there before the reality of the move will hit me...

This is the Last Night in our Home

This is the last night in our home
This is the last night in our home
This is the last night in our home
This is the last night in our home
This is the last night in our home

Unfortunately, saying it over and over doesn't make it feel any more real...

Of all the things about moving to another continent, another country – the thing that is bothering me the most right now is leaving my house. I love the transformation that takes place as you live somewhere. You begin by needing to try every light switch before you find the right one, waking up to all the creaks and noises a house makes when it settles down for the night and feeling like a stranger inside of the unfamiliar walls. There is always a moment (invariably in the middle of the night) when you realize that you have just gone to the bathroom, gotten a new roll of toilet paper from the linen closet, let the dog out, got a drink in the kitchen and straightened all the cushions in the living room all completely in the dark. You know this place – every creak on every stair, every oddly shaped shadow… You have a moment where you acknowledge that your house just became your home.

I’ve lived in many places throughout my life. I lived in a dining room with curtains for door, I slept in an armchair for a couple weeks and I have even slept in my car. Even though I’ve moved a dozen times and had multiple apartments/living arrangements, I have only ever had two “homes”. My childhood home held a million happy memories – even the trees in the woods had special stories and memories attached to them. After Mom died and we had to sell the house, I was able to visit it for one last time. It was completely empty and it had been repainted. I felt very little sadness walking through each room… It was just a shell - just a house. Once you took my parents and their things out of that house it ceased to be a home.

I was immediately on a mission to recreate that feeling of history, that feeling of roots dug deep. I was only 24 when I closed on my house. I walked into that conference room with a fresh pen and proceeded to sign my name over and over on what felt like hundreds of papers. It was the most important thing I had done in my life up to that point. (Soon to be eclipsed by getting married) This home was filled with a mix of mine, his, my parents, his parents and mostly ours. It’s been very very hard seeing our things sold, packed and given away. The rooms are eerily empty and I am starting to not recognize my home anymore.

It’s equally hard (if not harder) to imagine other people’s things in places where mine always were. What I have always referred to as the “back bedroom” was always meant for a nursery. Every time I walked into that room I pictured a crib, a rocker, a baby… Someone else is turning that room into a nursery for their little baby now and when I walk in I feel an absolute sadness.

Maybe it’s time to just start thinking of it as just a house again… instead of My Home…

Visas Are Approved!

Well, our Visas were approved on Monday night.  We happened to be out to dinner, discussing all the things that led up to this crazy decision and worrying about when we would actually be able to leave when Joe's phone chirped. He glanced at it and then started reading in earnest...

"You're never going to believe this", he said.

So, we had some wine to celebrate and then we came home to three hours of finding the best airfare with a little more than a weeks notice.  All in all, we didn't do too badly.  We are booked on Quantas out of LA on Wednesday the 23rd.  I booked economy class; but I'm hoping we can pay for an upgrade or something!

Hey Elsja, can you tell me the best way to get an upgrade on Quantas?!?

Eden Park - Part 2

After the lovely lunch and playing in the park we walked down to Krohn's Conservatory to see the butterfly exhibit they had going on there.  Of course - beautiful pictures ensued:  Well, if beautiful means hot and sweaty that is...
First we walked through some sort of green house area that had a very cool waterfall.  They had a lot of tropical plants and many that my sisters and I recognized as some of my mom's favorites.
This tropical hibiscus was just so flashy I had to take a picture!  Mom always grew red and pink ones and this was the first time I had seen an orange one!
And, of course, there were some flashy ladies there as well!!

Walking through to the butterfly exhibit, we saw some super gross bugs and then stumbled into a room filled with Bonsai trees.  It was fascinating to see how the limbs are trained with copper wire. Some of the trees that were on exhibit had been "in training" for almost 50 years!!

This tree was only about a foot high; but I wanted to show all of the wiring on it's limbs so due to the camera angle it looks quite large!

After that we entered the sauna that was the butterfly exhibit!

They gave us fake flowers to trick the butterflies into landingon them instead of the delicious real ones.  Most of them weren't dumb enough to fall for that one; but some of them were quite happy to land on arms, shoulders etc...
Some of them were quite alright with the fake flowers too; but I think that the natural sweetnees of my darling neices may have had something to do with it!

Eden Park - Part 1

Friday was my last day at work...  It was weird - I actually did a lot of work, got called into an impromtu meeting for an hour (all though, really, it wasn't surprising) and did a lot more work after that.  My manager got me a beautiful engraved clock with my initials and my last day of work on it.  I only cried a very little and I was very proud of myself for not bawling like a baby the whole time.  I had to rush out of work though, to make it to Eden Park in time to meet my family for round 3? 4? (I've lost track!) of saying goodbye.

What a beatiful view!  I am going to miss Kentucky so very much...

My sister Annmarie (she of the collapsible basket and photo frame noteriety) was in town for a wedding so she and her family planned a lovely picnic afternoon for us and also my sister Theresa and brother Andrew.  I'm not sure why I'm the only one wearing sunglasses in this picture - I ended up looking like the odd man out!

The kids were so cute - I was distracted and spent a ton of time taking pictures of them ( and especially Lilia who was into an absolute cookie-eating frenzy!!).
The three girls found a little wading pond and they were content to spend the afternoon splashing through it to run across a cute little bridge that went over a deeper portion of it.  What a great park for children...

The boys decided that they were champion duck scarers for a while and then they decided to completely switch gears and spend the rest of the time feeding them!

Still Saying Goodbye

Last Thursday Joe and I headed over to my brother Matt's house to visit with his family and also to see my sister Theresa and my brother Andrew.  We just sat on the couch, drank beers and talked; but we had so much fun that we didn't leave until close to midnight.  I was sad to go; but we made plans to do dinner this Saturday.  The highlight of the evening was Lilia, reading the same book over and over - talking to it, petting it, kissing it.....  Completely Adorable!!

To Help me Remember

Well, my fabulously thoughtful sister Annmarie sent me this photo frame before the movers came.  I packed it in with the rest of our pictures so that I can look at it in Australia when I am feeling super homesick.  I am so thankful for such a lovely family who cares about me so much!  I cant decide which of the photos I like the best; but the one of my nephew Ben, dressed as a cowboy in only his unders is really topping the list!!  Thanks Annie - I appreciate this more than you will ever know!

The Great Move!

When I was growing up I was a little obsessed with Mayflower moving trucks.  My dad was a school teacher; and in the summers he would work extra jobs so we had enough money.  One of the things that he did was work as a mover.  I'm not sure exactly of the particulars; but I do know that he moved for Mayflower and Atlas Van Lines.  I remember looking for Mayflower trucks every time we were on the freeway - I loved the little ship symbol.  I hold those memories still today; and I still get giddy when I see a Mayflower truck on the freeway.  For some of you, these pictures of moving tape will mean alot more than they will to others.
I have to say, I was quite pleased when I saw the truck pull up.  It's just another sign that we are doing the right thing.  I lost all my anxiety about our stuff being damaged, sunk, lost etc....  I just stopped worrying.  I was a little taken aback though when they showed us our tiny tiny container.  They actually had two crates in the truck though and we could use both if we wanted.  Each crate is about 200 cubic feet so we were trying to just use one if we could get away with it.  Our movers names were Vinnie and Tom and they were so wonderful.  They were super careful with our things and Vinnie was like a jigsaw packing ninja.  He got more stuff to go in that crate than I thought was possible.  He used every spare inch and we ended up only using one carton with just a couple extra boxes which can go in a smaller pack and be sent for much cheaper.  He also did a completely spot on Aussie accent so he kept us in stitches during the whole move.  It was weird watching our stuff get packed away... I keep remarking that it will seem like Christmas morning when we get our stuff.  I think, by then, we will have forgotten everything we packed. I should have gift-wrapped a few of the items to make it even more festive.

After the crate was packed, I had to sign a bazillion papers and then they were gone!  It is surreal to have an almost empty garage...
